This is the last episode in my 13-week pilot. I may resume the show in a few months. Please follow this blog or sign up for my weekly tips for stress relief on my website. I plan to have webinars so I can directly answer your questions on content from these 13 shows! Stay Tuned!

Ma Nithya Maneeshananda Swami
In last week’s show Ma Maneesha - an ordained teacher of the worldwide mission of Enlightened Master ‘Swamiji’ Paramahamsa Nithyananda - shared the secrets to why we have negative responses to life and what to do about it. This week she returns to answer listener questions. Listen to her practical life solutions to these and many more questions. Is it possible for a successful business person with so much stress and anxiety to really find inner balance and enlightenment? How can I find the right person to marry? Can parents objectively see root patterns in their children and guide them to dig it out of their lives? When moving forward in our lives, why do deep-seeded conflicts surface? How can we disconnect our negative emotions with our eating habits? She shares these sacred secrets from the 21-day Inner Awakening (IA) course conducted monthly by Swamiji. IA is available to anyone seeking to make radical life changes. Learn more at innerawakening.org conducted next in Bali Dec.1-21, 2013.

Recipe of the week

Split Pea Soup for 6

The pressure cooker was made for split pea soup!

one quarter of a chopped onion (opt.)
1 Tbsp sunflower oil
1 Tbsp Herbs de Provence
3 large carrots - cubed
2 stalks of celery - finely chopped
2 cups dry split peas (inspected and rinsed to remove dirt)
sea salt + pepper
4 Tbsp brown rice vinegar

In a large pot or pressure cooker, sauté onion in sunflower oil with herbs. Onion is optional. Then add carrots and celery. Sauté a few more minutes. Next add cleaned split . Finally add 7 cups of pre-boiled water. Stir everything then close the pressure cooker and bring it to one atmosphere pressure for 10 minutes then turn off the heat for another 10 minutes until the pressure releases the lid lock. If you don’t use a pressure cooker it might take two hours until the split peas get soft. Add additional salt and pepper if needed then stir in vinegar. Put soup in the blender to make it 'soup-er' smooth!

Ultimate raw chocolate peanut butter cup

Came up with this last week and had to share it! Eat tiny bites as this has a caffeine kick!

10 raw cacao beans
2 Tbsp of raw sugar like coconut sugar,  jaggery, or Sucanat
2 Tbsp of peanut or almond butter
1 tsp melted coconut oil
1/2 tsp sesame seeds

Grind cocoa beans in a coffee grinder till ground into a powder. In a small bowl, mix all ingredients. Form into a soft ball or a cup. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top. Let it sit at least for 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Nibble, savor, and enjoy!

Evening Meditation to be done every night!

Shakti Dharana from "Meditation is for You"

This book has many diverse and powerful meditation techniques but Shakti Dharana is my favorite. I have been doing this every night for two years. This IS the solution to a great night's sleep!  If you wake up in the middle of the night, then use this to get back to sleep.

This meditation is more like a prayer than a meditation because it is a direct way of putting you in touch with the energy of all Existence. It should be practiced at night just before you go to sleep because this makes you sleepy.
  •  Choose a cool, dark room with good ventilation. You can also practice outdoors if you want. Kneel on the ground. Use a mat if it helps you feel more comfortable.
  • With the top of your feet flat on the floor, raise yourself up on your knees so that your thighs are vertical.
  • Next raise both arms up with your palms facing toward the sky. Turn your face skyward and wait.
  • In a moment, you will feel the energy of existence flowing into you. Don’t resist. Let the energy enter into you. You will feel a trembling in your arms. Then slowly your whole body will begin to tremble and sway slightly with the energy. Just allow the movements. Drink in the energy. You become the point where heaven and earth merge. You begin to feel as if your body is no more.
  • When you feel completely full, bend down and put your forehead on the ground while you tuck your toes under your feet to stretch the arches Place your hands - palms down - next to your head with your elbows touching your knees. So you are slightly inverted with your bottom up.
  • Allow the energy which had filled you to pour into the earth from your forehead. Stay here for several breaths until you feel empty.
  • Next in this position place the top of your feet on the floor again and raise up on your knees so that your palms and face point skyward. Stay in this position and fill up with energy as before.
  • Then pour out the energy with your forehead on the ground as before.
  • After a few rounds, often I will fall asleep in this inverted position! It feels like the words in my head are actually flowing into the earth!
  • Repeat the full cycle seven times. Each time, each of the seven major chakras becomes energized. If you repeated more than seven times, you may feel over-energized and restless.
  • When you have finished your prayer, immediately go to bed and fall asleep in that prayerful state. Fall into that energy, sleep into it. When you awake, you will feel refreshed and revitalized.

Recipe of the week

Quick Kale Soup for 4

Since I have been doing the Nirahara Samyama liquid-food meditation, I have gotten pretty creative with blended soups!

4 handfuls of chopped fresh kale with ribs removed
½ block of tofu
1 chopped apple (peel left on)
1 tsp yellow curry
2 tsp coriander, black pepper
¼ tsp sea salt
4 c water
2 Tbsp brown rice vinegar

Place all ingredients except vinegar in a pot. Simmer 5-minutes with lid on til kale is slightly wilted. Place all in blender. Add brown rice vinegar and extra salt or pepper if needed. Serve hot. Very warming in cool weather!

Daily Meditation for one year!

Meditation for Completion (to be done before bed)
POWERFUL meditation to blast away your stress!
(Listen to the last part of show to hear Ma Maneesha guide you in her voice - a powerful exchange of energy and understanding!)

  • Please close your eyes. Bring your awareness to your breath. Inhale deeply and slowly. Exhale deeply and slowly. Experience the Prana Shakti - life energy that’s moving in and out of you with every breath of yours.
  • Now, look into any one conflicting situation of your life. You can take a most recent conflict, as recent as what happened to you last night. Take one conflicting situation of your life and bring forth all the characters in that situation. Relive that situation as if it is happening now.
  • With closed eyes, look into that situation. Experience that rewinding, replaying right now. As you are looking into it, relive that situation just as if it is happening for the first time now.
  • So as you are living that situation you will see that you are there in that situation. Connect with the you that you are there in the situation. Experience what is happening inside you as you are going through that situation.
  • Look in with awareness and see what are the thoughts happening inside you. What are the words that are happening inside you and outside you? What are the feelings and emotions happening inside you?
  • Now, with total awareness and a commitment to be in the space of completion applying the cognition or understanding of completion, ask yourself, “What would I do differently if I were to experience completion in this situation?” And, you will see the answer is there.
  • Whatever that is needed for you to experience completion, bring in and replace those thoughts, those words, and feelings which will allow completion to happen inside you in the same situation.
  • Slowly, very slowly, you can open your eyes.
When you practice this daily, I am finding that I am doing this closer and closer to the time when incompletion happens. Finally you decide "I chose to have only positive experiences." Then you fall in tune with what is and your stress is gone! Problems become challenges. Life becomes a miraculous adventure of continuous expansion!

Meditation for the week

Color Meditation
Abbreviated from the last chapter of The Power of Auras
(transcribed from 49:57 – 56:08 min)

  •    Get comfortable. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. And let it go. Take a deep breath of divine love. Breathe in and release. A big deep breath of relaxation - breathe in and let it go. Let us now let go of all cares and concerns of the day. Just settle down into deep relaxation.
  •    Let us now breathe in a green colored light which saturates all areas of the body. Let’s let go of all tension. Breathe in green colored light and release tension from your eyes, eyebrows, space between the eyebrows, temples, your jaw, neck, shoulders.
  •    Then just take a deep breath of blue light and go much deeper. Let the shoulders drop. Let go of your back. Your upper back, your lower back, chest, stomach. Just let go of your arms, hands, legs, feet. Your whole body.
  •    And just take a big deep breath of violent light and relax. Breathe in violent light. Relax your entire body and settle down into deep relaxation. Peace, peace, be still. Be still and be at peace. Peace, peace, be at peace. Be still and be at peace.
  •    Now let’s be aware to expand from this physical body to your higher bodies that surround your physical form. Become aware of your vital body which surrounds and permeates this body. Breathe in a red light of prana into the vital body. The vital body of radiant light is filled with pranic energy coursing through your nadis and your chakras bringing life energy to every nerve and cell.
  •    Take a deep breath and go even deeper and just become aware of your mental emotional body that permeates and surrounds your vital body. This body of multicolored light just settles down to inner peace and quietude. Just breathe a soft orange light into this body. Let go as your mind becomes peaceful and serene like a still pond without a ripple. Your mind is quiet, still, radiant, and relaxed in perfect peace.
  •    Take a deep breath and go even deeper. Breathe in and let it go. Then be aware of your intellect body breathing a gentle yellow light into this body. Moving through any ego barriers that have separated you from the divine light of God’s love.
  •    And then just take a deep breath going even deeper. Walking through any seeming barriers that prevent you from experiencing your true nature of being. Allowing yourself to fill with the radiance of divine love. That is your true home. Your true self. Your true divine nature. Allow yourself to merge with and become one with your radiant body of light which is the divine presence within you.
  •    And we now give gratitude to God for this beautiful meditation. Knowing that we are filled with the white light of God’s love, peace, and presence. We are filled with the blessings of spirit. So we come forth from this meditation in great gratitude and joy.
  •    In order to come forth from the meditation, what I would like you to do is to pretend that you are blowing out candles. Just blowout three or four candles. Coming out of the meditation just blowing out the candles. All the way out to inward and outward balance.
  •    Then just say out loud, “I am alert, I am awake, I am inwardly and outwardly balanced. I am in control. I am the only authority in my life. I am divinely protected by the light of my being. Thank you God and so it is!”

As parents we want the best for our children yet, as children grow up, parenting becomes a battle of wills. What is the secret to cooperation? Like tuning into a radio station, we need to tune into the space of a child.
We have this idea that children come into our lives as blank slates that we can write on. Not true! Your child chose this life with you for a purpose! As parents, we are here to provide the tools and life experiences so they can fulfill their purpose. As Maria Montessori said, “Follow the child!” Listen to discover how to guide your children to find fulfillment and emotional intelligence. As fully-expressed humans, we are part of the whole of existence. Simply immerse yourself in nature to experience this. The modern life is becoming more isolated and even fearful of nature. This “Nature Deprivation Disorder” creates fear-based anxieties. Listen to discover fun and ‘priceless’ ways that your family can reconnect with each other and the miracles surrounding us!

Recipe of the week

Coconut Cumin Rice

This is a nice change from plain basmati rice and creates wonderful aromatic smells in the kitchen!

  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 cup of basmatic rice
  • ¼ tsp of sea salt or less
  • 1.5 cups of boiling water

I prefer to use a pressure cooker as it makes perfect rice with 5-minutes of heat but you can use a pot with a loose lid too. Under medium heat, place the coconut oil in a pot or pressure cooker. Add the cumin seeds and cook til brown just a minute or two. Add the dry rice and stir a few minutes til the rice looks shiny. Add the salt then the boiling water. (Water should be boiling or much will be lost to evaporation as the water hits the hot pot.) With a pressure cooker over medium heat, heat to ½ atmosphere of pressure (first red line) and adjust the heat to keep the pressure from rising more. Cook at that pressure for 5 minutes. Then turn off the heat and let the pot sit about 10-minutes until you can open the lid. OR with a pot - it should either have a heavy bottom or use a heat-diffuser to minimize scorching - just heat to simmer then cover with a loose-fitting lid about 20-minutes until all water is absorbed. Finally, fluff the rice with a fork to prevent clumping

Meditation for the week

Listening Meditation

I spoke in my 4th show about observing yourself using your senses. This week practice this with hearing. Just observe the sounds you hear. Next take it deeper and more subtle. Observe yourself in the act of listening. These are two different spaces to experience! In the first case, the thing that creates the sound is the object of your awareness. In the second case, YOU are the object of your awareness while you are listening. Practice this as much as possible when you are alone. Then bring this same non-judgmental awareness to when you are listening to someone. This is the hard part! We might be hearing the person but not LISTENING! Because instead we are listening to the voice in our head and not to what is being said. We think we know what they will say or are gathering our side of the story. True listening means that you have completely lost your sense of self in the other person’s story. You don’t even hear their words – your mind creates a picture of what they are saying! In that beautiful space, so much healing happens! Sometimes people will be so open and may even solve their own problems. Try this especially with your children. Many times they act out because we aren’t really listening to them. We are on our phone or computer. Giving them the attention they deserve is like filling their gas tank. They may need only 10-minutes with you but if you give them a space of full listening that really makes them calm and happy that lasts for hours! Plus you will feel complete too!

Bring Higher Consciousness into Classrooms!

Listen now to my guest Nitai Deranja on "Bring Higher Consciousness into Classrooms" or download the replay after that day on iTunes

Nitai Deranja: bio
The value of higher consciousness is becoming more appreciated in all aspects of life. According to Wired.com: “Meditation and mindfulness are the new rage in Silicon Valley. And it’s not just about inner peace—it’s about getting ahead.” Gradually, we are seeing the benefits of cultivating this higher consciousness in our children. Nitai Deranja has spent the past 40 years helping young people at the elementary, secondary, and collegiate levels of education to express this higher potential. What would it look like if young people carried a higher level of emotional maturity into their relationships? What if they chose their careers from an inner awareness of their talents and interests? What if they learned to approach life’s obstacles as opportunities for growth? In this interview you can discover what you can do for yourself, your family, and your schools to change the future for generations to come!

Recipe of the week

Ayurvedic Green Beans (serves 4)

A much healthier Thanksgiving recipe than mushroom soup green beans.
Big handful of fresh green beans for 4. Green beans should snap when folded in half. Cut off the tips. Can leave whole or cut into 2-inch pieces. Boil about 6 minutes until the beans are somewhat cooked but not mushy. Drain and cool.

Meanwhile make the dressing that is great on other cooked vegetables too!

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp whole brown mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp of sea salt
  • 1 Tbsp brown rice vinegar

Heat the olive oil in a small deep pot under medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and turn up the heat just high enough that the seeds pop for a minute but without burning the oil. Make sure you have lid on the pot as the hot seeds might jump out. Let the seeds and oil cool then add the salt and vinegar. Stir and mix with the green beans.

Meditation for the week

Driving Meditation

I came up with this meditation after reading a small but mind-blowing book called Beyond The Siddhis: Supernatural Powers and the Sutras of Patanjali. This technique can be applied to anything that you do automatically – like bathing, brushing your teeth or even driving! Last summer my son and I drove from Mt. Shasta (where I found this book!) to the SF Bay Area and we decided to take the scenic route through Mt. Lassen. The drive was about 8 hours yet I was really energized and alert doing this meditation.

While I was driving, especially on the winding mountain roads, I witnessed myself accelerate, break, and turn the wheel as needed to follow my lane. So I did not have any other thoughts or judgments. I spoke very little. I just watched myself driving and listening. I noticed my son was also in a calm space of just making up songs. We both arrived happy, peaceful, and energized!

Recipe of the week

Sicilian Vegetable Salad

This works best with sweated vegetables. Sweating vegetables means to place the vegetables in the pot with a drizzle of olive oil and few shakes of sea salt but with NO water. Use a pot with a tight-fitting lid or use a pressure cooker but keep the heat low enough to not increase the pressure. Leave the temperature on medium-low for about 10 – 20 minutes. The vegetables self-steam in their own juice which brings out their natural sweetness. I have used sliced ¼-inch wide 4 carrots, ¼ onion, and 3 celery stalks, with 3-medium red potatoes (1-inch cubes) with this recipe. Instead of potatoes, you can add 1-can of drained warmed, cooked garbanzo or kidney beans too. I mix the beans in at the end and not cook them with the other vegetables. For added color and nutrition, add ½ inch x 2-inch strips of ½ bunch of kale that has been steamed about 11-minutes. Mix all with the dressing below. This dish is good warm or cold the next day!

Simple dressing: Splash of unsweetened brown rice vinegar and sea salt to taste. Brown rice vinegar and sea salt is magical or any steamed vegetables!

Sicilian Dressing (adapted from The Ayurvedic Cookbook):

1 Tbsp brown rice vinegar
1 tsp dry organo
1 tsp dry basil
¼ tsp dry or fresh rosemary
½ tsp sea salt
1 Tbsp frozen apple juice
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp chia seeds – ground in a coffee grinder (optional to thicken dressing)

Put vinegar in a small bowl and whisk in the spices. Add the apple juice, oil, and chia last.

Meditation for the week

Walking Meditation

"Walking and Falling" by Laurie Anderson. Fun song from a very creative artist to listen to before you start your walking meditation.

Practice Esther's technique for glide walking. To move your unweighted leg forward, contract the gluteus medius muscle at the top of the buttocks. This muscle can be found by rotating your leg outward 45 degrees  then lifting the leg behind you. Basically if you are standing on that leg and contract the gluteus medius muscle as if to lift that leg behind you then that action pushes you forward! But then you keep that muscle engaged so that the other foot lands softly. Do this slowly with awareness - focus on engaging that muscle for one leg as you walk for a few minutes then switch to just engaging that muscle in the other leg. Finally alternate to reprogram your walking! This helps to relieve lower back problems and takes the flat out of your bottom! Do this with full awareness - even around the house slowly  - to make this your walking meditation.
